Community LINC is proud to present Leo Morton with the 2019 Hometown Hero Award!

The Hometown Hero Award was established to illuminate the extraordinary impact of

individual, couple, or organization has made to the Greater Kansas City area for the

betterment of the lives of our most vulnerable citizens.

Originally from Alabama, Leo Morton grew up in a small, segregated neighborhood in Birmingham, AL – about one mile from where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. drafted his famous Birmingham Jail letter. This event and others helped Leo develop a deep sense of purpose at an early age, cultivating a passion for equality that directed him to become an active civic and community leader. From Civil Rights demonstrations in college to championing equal rights as an active, civic-minded community leader, Morton has served in numerous capacities and on several organizations’ Board of Directors in Kansas City. For his work in the community, he has been the recipient of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Kansas Citian of the Year in 2014, the KC Business Journal Power 100 in 2017, and the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. Leo is currently the Chief Operating Officer of DeBruce Companies.

Mark your calendar for the 2019 Rent Party on October 5, 2019 at the Sheraton Exhibit Hall! Join us for a fun-filled night of auctions, dinner, drinks, dancing and an opportunity to raise critical funding for homeless families!

For three decades, Community LINC has delivered housing and supportive services to nearly 4,246 homeless families representing over 14,000 individuals in Greater Kansas City.  Our approach is to drive communal change from homelessness to homefullness.

Rent parties originated in 1920s Harlem in the heart of New York City. Tenants hired a musician or band to play for the neighborhood or building and then passed the hat to raise money for their rent. Naming our signature fundraising event in celebration of the rent parties is a perfect fit for Community LINC. We gather at the Rent Party to celebrate life in the heart of Kansas City and pay the rent for the families we serve as they transition from homelessness into self-sufficiency.

We invite you to support the Rent Party to ensure that every child and every family has the opportunity to thrive!  For more information, contact us at 816.389.8262 or development@communitylinc.org.
